The professorship for orthopedics at Friedrich Schiller University Jena is situated at the Waldkliniken Eisenberg.

The opening of the newly build hospital building took place in 2020. This guarantees the continuity of student bedside teaching, medical care on a university level and clinical research.

Research projects

Influence of curve morphology and location on the efficacy of rigid conservative treatment in patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis

The study focused on the influence of morphologic factors on the success rate of the treatment of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis with a Chéneau-brace and exercises (Schroth).

Lumbar single curves and double curves with larger thoracic curves resulted in higher success rates. Curves with a longer part below the apex also responded with higher success. Besides this, risk for treatment failure was elevated in major curves > 28.5° (before treatment, OR 7.1) and >24,5° (in brace, OR 11.8).

Reversed gap technique for individual positioning of total knee arthroplasties

The positioning of a total knee replacement affects its survival as well as function and patient satisfaction. The ideal positioning of a knee implant is yet unknown and dependent on the surgeons preferred surgical technique. This rct-trial evaluates whether the reversed gap technique leads to better results than the conventional gap technique.

The effect of Lavanox on human chondrocytes and bacteria

Periprosthetic infection is a common reason for surgical revision. Given the increasing resistance of bacteria to antibiotics local antiseptic treatment is gaining in importance. The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of sodium hypochlorite and chlorhexidine against bacterial biofilms. The findings confirm the effectiveness of sodium hypochlorite and chlorhexidine. Both antiseptics are chondrotoxic, but sodium hypochlorite damages human chondrocytes less than chlorhexidine in vitro.

Forgivingness of an anteromedial positioned small locked plate for high tibial osteotomy in case of overcorrection and lateral hinge fracture

The aim of the study was the evaluation of the stiffness and interfragmentary movement when using a soft tissue sparing, anteromedially placed, small locked plate in a model of a high tibial osteotomy addressing the aspects of overcorrection to valgus and lateral hinge fracture. Despite both variables negatively influenced the outcome parameters, the plate provided sufficient stability for successful healing of the osteotomy.

Sacroiliac motion in relation to fixation length and stiffness of a lumbosacral fusion

This study evaluates the dependency of the increase of sacroiliac motion on the fixation length and stiffness during lumbar or lumbosacral fusion. According to this, a cadaver model of loading and motion of the lumbar spine was established. The spines are loaded by simulating muscle forces. The resulting motion is recorded employing an optical stereoscopic measurement device.
