The institute consists of three working groups: Medical Data Sciences (head: Prof. André Scherag), Medical Statistics and Epidemiology (head: Prof. Peter Schlattmann) and Medical Informatics (head: Prof. Cord Spreckelsen by 01.07.2019).

In teaching, the institute is responsible for the cross-sectional topic 1 in the Human Medicine curriculum and for other teaching tasks (dentistry, medical photonics and molecular medicine) - also beyond the medical faculty (e.g. nutritional and computer science). The IMSID is also responsible for the biometric counselling and supports the Centre for Clinical Studies. It is also integrated topics related to digitization.

SMITH Smart Medical Information Technology for Health Care

As part of the Medical Informatics Initiative , the SMITH consortium uses innovative information technologies to make data from research and patient care accessible. The aim is to improve clinical research and patient care. At the UKJ, a data integration centre is being set-up for this purpose, which will, among other things, ensure cross-institutional networking and secure data exchange while addressing data protection requirements. Uses Cases like HELP and POLAR serve as demonstrators.

Junior research group: predictive analysis and data-driven artificial intelligence for the logistic support of supply processes

The junior research group aims to develop or adapt methods of predictive analysis and data-driven artificial intelligence for the logistical support of care processes and improvement patient care. The group combines AI-methods with simulation and optimization approaches, and develops suitable solutions for data integration. The proposed project, thus, establishes an AI-based logistic support of care processes.

DISCHARGE: Diagnostic Imaging Strategies for Patients with Stable Chest Pain and Intermediate Risk of Coronary Artery Disease: Com-parative Effectiveness Research of Existing Technologies

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the leading cause of death in high-income countries. The core of this project is to evaluate the possible superiority of CT angiography over ICA (invasive catheter angiography) concerning safety (resulting in fewer major adverse cardiovascular events) in patients with stable chest pain and intermediate pretest likelihood (10-70%) of CAD. Prof Schlattmann is the statistician responsible for the project. This project will develop advanced methods for survival analysis based on finite mixture models entry in ClinicalTrials.gov

HPV_INT_CX: Integrated human papillomavirus DNA as individualized biomarker for the detection of recurrent cervical pre-cancer in post-treatment surveillance

The objective of the multicenter observational clinical study is to validate a personalized test for risk assessment of recurrent cervical pre-cancer. The conventional high-risk HPV-testing used in post-surgery monitoring cannot differentiate between viral reinfection and recurrent disease. We envisage that this novel approach will have a superior diagnostic accuracy in comparison to the standard algorithm. The department has been involved in the scientific conceptual design and is responsible for the biostatistical aspects of the trials.

The aim of the Netzwerk Universitätsmedizin is to bring together and evaluate data, findings, action plans, diagnostic and treatment strategies of all German university hospitals and, if necessary, other actors in the sense of "Pandemic Preparedness". It has defined thirteen urgent topics on which nationwide inter-hospital research projects are being launched; the JUH is involved in eleven projects. In addition to leading the local task force, the institute is integrated via the CODEX project.

The SMITH Congress 2019 „New Horizons in Digital Health“ showcases progress and prospects for medical informatics initiative.
Dr. Miriam Kesselmeier erhielt was awared a poster prize for „Validation of the qSOFA(-65) score compared to the CRB-65 score for risk prediction in community-acquired pneumonia” at the meeting of the “Mitteldeutsche Gesellschaft für Pneumologie“ in 2020.
As a biometrician, Prof. Dr. André Scherag worked in the "SMOOTH study team", which was awarded the Lothar Beyer Prize of the German Foundation for General Practice in 2019.

Special commitment in teaching
