have a strong tradition - the Faculty of Medicine was one of the four founding faculties that established the Jena University in 1558 and the work-place of many well-known physicians. In Jena, Hans Berger discovered the electroencephalogram (EEG). The successful search of the anatomist Loder together with Johann Wolfgang Goethe for the intermaxillary bone is regarded as one of the earliest examples of targeted medical research in the modern era. Accordingly, we feel obliged to innovate by tradition - in research as well as in teaching.

Being the only university medical institution in Thuringia, the Faculty of Medicine offers teaching for 2,500 students of medicine, dentistry, molecular medicine, and medical photonics, providing modern curricula and excellent working conditions in internships and clinicals.
