Project: Microbiota-gut-brain axis: Inflammatory and immune markers during aging and following interventions

I am from India and obtained my Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Physics. I had a brief stint as research assistant at Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering, Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), Richmond, USA and later at Department of Physiology and Biophysics in the same university. My project was related to one of the Rep proteins of adeno associated virus (AAV) namely Rep68. I am fascinated to join in the SmartAge ITN project where I will be studying the impact of inflammation in gut-brain cross talk.
What is your project/research about? What would you like to find out?
My project is addressing how the inflammation modulate the communication between gut and brain. We will be developing activated microglia cell (M2) imaging tracers to analyze inflammatory/immune markers in vivo in a longitudinal fashion. Inflammatory status in the colon will be monitored with validated SPECT tracers. Further our aim is to find morphological brain markers with respect to aging/cognition.
Why did you apply for a Marie Skłodowska-Curie ITN and especially this project?
After a career break, I was actively looking for Ph.D positions to continue my career. I got interested in Marie Skłodowska-Curie ITN, because it will provide an opportunity to pursue my future and a chance to interact with researchers from various discipline.
What is so fascinating for you on research in general?
I am very interested in research. I am a Physicist, but I want to learn more from biology. I believe that working at the interphase of two subjects will help to understand the research questions properly. I am also willing to learn new concepts and techniques.
What do you do in your free time? Do you have special interests/hobbies?
In my free time I like gardening, listening to music and reading books.
What are your plans for your future? Where/what you will be in 5 years?
After Ph.D I want to continue my carrier as researcher/scientist at the interphase of Biology and Physics.
