The Institute of Immunology was established in 1977 as the first institute of immunology in the GDR and one of the first institutes of immunology in Germany. The founding director was Prof. Lothar Jäger, who headed the institute until his retirement in 1999.
We research the mechanisms that lead to the development and chronification of inflammatory diseases and try to develop new therapeutic strategies for patients with chronic inflammatory diseases. In teaching, we are responsible for curricular and optional courses for students of human medicine and dentistry as well as in the study programs M.Sc. Molecular Medicine, B.Sc. Nutritional Sciences and B.Sc. Biochemistry/Molecular Biology.
