The aging immune system.
Clinical and experimental data show that age-associated changes in the immune system can cause organ damage and contribute to organismic aging. Immunosenescence is characterised by a reduced protection from infectious diseases, increasing inflammatory responses (inflammaging) and an increased incidence and prevalence of autoimmune diseases.
We are currently investigating how immunoaging affects arthritis pathogenesis and severity. In a project funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) we are currently examining the efficacy of vaccine responses in elederly patients together with our collaboration Partner Prof. Pletz (Center for Infectious Diseases and Infection Control, Jena University Hospital).
