The research activities of the Department of Hematology and Medical Oncology include clinical trials of all phases in the fields of hematology, oncology and infectious disease. Translational projects are carried out in close cooperation with the laboratory working groups in the department.
The translational topics are focused on the molecular mechanisms of signal transduction in solid tumors and hematological malignancies. A particular research emphasis is placed on the active principles of new substances for the treatment of leukemias and lymphomas as well as the diagnostic relevance of circulating tumor cells.
Within the framework of a national register study we are gathering data on patients with the rare haemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH).
Individual topics align with the main research areas of the Medical Faculty: ageing and age-related disease, sepsis and its consequences, cellular signal transduction, medical optics and photonics.
Our researchers maintain close working relationships with the Center for Sepsis Control and Care (CSCC), the Interdisciplinary Center for Clinical Research (IZKF), the UniversityTumorCenter (UTC), the natural science institutes of the University of Jena as well as extramural research institutes including the Fritz-Lipmann-Institut (FLI) and the Hans-Knöll-Institut (HKI) located on the Beutenberg campus in Jena.
The following are selected specialist and scientific societies and committees in which our researchers participate: American Society for Clinical Oncology (ASCO) , American Society of Hematology (ASH), International Association for Comparative Research on Leukemia and Related Diseases (ICRLRD), American Association for Cancer Research (AACR), East German Hematology/Oncology Study Group (OSHO), German Society for Hematology and Oncology (DGHO), Consortium for Internal Oncology (AIO), Thuringian Cancer Society (TKG), German Cancer Society (DKG).
