Objectives
The autonomic nervous system (ANS) plays a dominant role for the complex control of multiple vitally important physiological subsystems in the organism. Its activity is reflected in heart rate variability (HRV) characteristics.
Fetal magnetocardiographic recordings provide a resulting unique methodology of prenatal diagnosis with regard to the identification of fetal maturation disturbances with instantaneous prenatal consequences as well as the "fetal programming" of diseases in later postnatal age, such as cardiovascular, metabolic, hyperkinetic, cognitive and behavioral problems.
Another research area is the instantaneous risk assessment and identification of developing infections/sepsis by means of HRV indices due to the ANS involvement in the immune system function.
Research Topics
Fetal maturation and risk assessment
- Database of fetal normal development: fetal heart rate variability (fHRV) under consideration of fetal age and behavioral state.
- Design and evaluation of fHRV indices with respect to ANS functional structure and universal developmental rules of complex systems.
- Influence of pathological disturbances (intrauterine growth restriction) and treatment (glucocorticoids) to fHRV.
- Postnatal outcome (one year, seven years).
Critical care risk assessment in adults
- Study of predictive value of HRV after acute ischemic stroke for sub-acute infections and sepsis.
