Summer School 2013

The Interdisciplinary Center for Clinical Research of the University Hospital of Jena invites young scientists from all over the world to participate in the Summer School of Molecular Medicine. The Summer School will be held from August 19th till September 19th, 2013 in Jena and will provide an excellent opportunity to get familiar with research topics of molecular medicine and modern laboratory techniques.

The Biomolecular Photonics Group organizes a module that will give you an introduction into into modern fluorescence microscopy techniques. On the first day of the module you will first get an introduction into the principles of optical microscopy and fluorescence spectroscopy. Lectures in the morning will be followed by practical experiments in the afternoon, where you can put the theory into practice. On the morning of the second day you will be able to try out several fluorescence labelling techniques on your own. The cells prepared on this day will be imaged on the forth day of the course. In the afternoon you will be able to do fluorescence spectroscopic experiments with our spectrofluorimeter. These experiments will provide the basis for the confocal measurements on the forth day. On the third day you will have the possibility to synthesize nanosensors by yourself. The nanosensor you synthesize on this day will allow you to do ratiometric pH measurements in living cells. You will be able to test the nanosensors on the forth day. The fourth day will be dedicated to confocal microscopy. On this day you will have the opportunity to image the cells you have stained on the second day and try out the nanosensors you have synthesized on the third day. The rest of the day will focus on advanced imaging techniques such as fluorescence lifetime imaging (FLIM), Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) measurements and Fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS).
