Title: "Overview of ongoing basic research and planned research projects on Substance-Related and Behavioral Addictions, combining electrophysiological measures with Implicit Associations"
Abstract:
First, initial results of a research project within the DFG-research unit ACSID FOR 2974 will be presented. The focus in this research project (RP7) are implicit associations and altered cue associated impulse control in patients with gaming addiction, pathological gambling, and alcohol dependency. After that a brief overview of the second funding period of ACSID FOR 2974 RP7.2 is provided. Here the focus lies on evaluating in-game craving and inherent factors in gaming and online gambling in semi-naturalistic environments. In a second part here the feasibility of a biofeedback-guided cue exposure training will be tested. Moreover, a new research idea which aims to investigate psychodynamic and psychophysiological aspects of substance use disorder and Internet addiction will be presented. In this proposed paradigm, the goal is to explore the interactions between addiction-related attitudes and attachment patterns in patients with computer game addiction compared to alcoholics. Therefore the Implicit Association Task (IAT) will be modified in conjunction with the Adult Attachment Projective Picture System (AAP, a projective test). For a deeper understanding of those interactions the cue reactivity of stimuli associated with internet addiction and stimuli from the AAP will be compared on the basis of event-related potentials of the EEG of the patients. Accompanying, symptom severity and mentalization capacity will be assessed through questionnaires. The AICA-SKI:IBS, a structured clinical interview, will be used to diagnose internet addiction. The results of this study are expected to provide insights into the interplay between neurobiological mechanisms, mentalization capacity and attachment patterns in the context of addiction. All over this could lead to a better understanding of the mechanisms underlying addiction and improve the foundation for targeted intervention strategies (mentalization based therapy).
