Summer term 2020
Dear students,
the coronavirus pandemic has changed our daily lives and will also affect our activities in the M.Sc. Medical Photonics programme during the next summer term and most likely also during the next winter term.
By resolution of the Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs, the summer semester will be a regular semester. The semester times (April 1st - September 30th, 2020) will remain unchanged. However, the lecture period at the Friedrich-Schiller University Jena will begin on May 4th and will end on July 17th, 2020.
As yet, there are relatively few confirmed cases of corona virus infections in Jena. But, the number of infections will increase and most likely the measures to prevent the spread of the infection will have to be sustained for a while. This means that teaching in the conventional way like we did it in the past will not be possible in the coming summer term. To allow you to continue with your studies and to be prepared at the same time for what is going to come the examination committee of the M.Sc. programme has decided (in accordance with the resolution of the Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural affairs and the recommendations of the Executive Board of the Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena) to take the following actions:
Lectures
Teaching will be switched entirely to digital teaching and learning formats. Lectures will be made available to you as commented PowerPoint slides, additional scripts and/or as a video. Depending on the decision of the module coordinator also other learning formats can be chosen. Lecturers can also recommend additional reading in designated textbooks.
The schedule for all online lectures will be announced on this website. The website will also include links to digital lectures and additional resources. Lectures will be available by latest at the date for which they are announced. They might be available earlier, and you can access them whenever you want. But, by latest you should work on the topic at the announced date.
Please, note that all videos and all additional materials are intellectual property of the lecturers and their coworkers who helped in creating this material. Moreover, the copyright of some figures shown in the videos might belong to third parties (e.g. the artist and/or the publisher). Therefore all webpages containing the link to the videos are password protected. To access them you can use the login and password you got in the previous semester. You are only allowed to use this material for your personal studies. You must not make the links or the linked material available to anybody else. You must not upload the material to any other webserver.
Homework and exercises
In order to help you participating on the lectures regularly and work constantly on the topics of a module (and not only just before the exam) each coordinator will require you to submit exercises or answer online question until a set deadline. All additional requirements and all deadlines will be announced on the webpage of the respective module.
Tutorials
In addition to lectures and exercises, coordinators of a module can also offer Online-Tutorials which most likely will be organized via WebEx. To participate in these tutorials you will have to login at the date and time announced on this website.
If you have questions concerning a lecture you might contact the respective lecturer via the e-mail address shown on the webpage. Please note that questions concerning a lecture should be asked by latest during the same week so that the lecturer can answer all questions concerning a subject at the same time via the online tutorial, via a web-blog or a video message.
Exams
Exams will take place at the end of the semester. As usual, exam dates will be announced on this website.
Currently, we plan to stick to the usual format of the exam. This means that oral and written exams will be done in rooms or lecture halls that are big enough to comply with all safety measures required by the Friedrich-Schiller University of Jena and the City of Jena. To comply with current regulations you will be required to wear a face mask during the exam.
Practical courses
Currently no decision is taken on how the practical courses in the 2nd semester will be organized. In any case, no course will start before May 4th. Please, see the webpage for the 2nd semester for more details.
Internships and the practical work on the master thesis can be organized in mutual agreement with the respective supervisors. Please, see the webpage for the 4th semester for more details.
Module catalogue
In agreement with the resolutions of the examination committe and the executive board of the Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena the requirements to complete a module might differ from the requirements announced in the module catalogue. For the coming summer term regulations announced on the Medical Photonics website will override regulations stated elsewhere.
